Why Photographs Matter
In many ways, photographs are the reason Cherish Me exists at all.
Like many people, we’ve lost photographs over the years. Life gets busy, things get misplaced, and before you realise it, pictures slowly disappear, scattered across boxes and different branches of the family.
Now that we have a family of our own, there are photographs I wish I could go back and find. Moments with grandparents and relatives who are no longer here, but who meant a great deal to us.
It’s only when those people are gone that you realise how much those small pieces of paper meant.
When you start thinking about the future, about your children and the things that will one day matter to them, the faces they’ll want to remember and the stories behind the family they came from, you begin to realise that photographs quietly carry all of that.
Small Pieces of Paper, Big Stories
For decades, photography was something physical. Prints lived in albums, shoeboxes, drawers and envelopes. They were passed around the table at family gatherings or brought out during quiet moments of nostalgia.
Those prints might look simple, but they often hold some of the most important memories a family has.
A photograph can instantly take you back to a place, a person, or a moment that might otherwise have faded with time.
Bringing Those Memories Back Into View
Many families have boxes of photographs that rarely get looked at anymore, simply because they’re tucked away.
Digitising them is a way of bringing those memories back into everyday life. A way of securing past stories and family history for future generations.
At Cherish Me, we carefully scan photographs at high resolution so the detail in the original image is preserved. Where it helps, we can gently restore photographs that have faded or picked up marks over the years.
The aim is never to dramatically alter an image or apply heavy artificial effects. Instead, the goal is simple: to help the photograph look as good as it reasonably can, while still feeling true to the moment it captured.
Preserving Them For The Future
Once photographs are digitised, they become much easier to share, store, and protect.
They can be safely backed up, shared with family members, or even brought together to create something new - a family timeline, a tribute film, or a story that connects generations.
Something that once sat quietly in a drawer can become something living again.
Because One Day They Will Matter
It’s easy to underestimate how important photographs are while the people in them are still around. But over time, they often become some of the most treasured things a family owns.
Digitising photographs is really about making sure those memories don’t slowly fade away, so that years from now someone can still sit down, open a folder, or watch a film and recognise the faces and stories that came before them.
Families often look back through generations, trying to understand the path that led to where they are today. Digitising what we have now helps lay down those stories for the future. Then one day, someone else will have the chance to look back and recognise the people who came before them.
We’re here to help make sure those memories are preserved.
How We Digitise Photographs
Every photograph is scanned individually using professional archival scanners designed specifically for photographic work. These flatbed scanners capture significantly more detail than basic home scanners or mobile phone apps, allowing us to preserve the texture, colour and tone of the original print as accurately as possible.
Photographs are carefully handled and scanned at high resolution to ensure that even small details are retained.
Where appropriate, we can apply gentle restoration to help photographs that have faded or picked up marks over time. This may include:
colour correction for faded images
balancing exposure and contrast
removing small dust marks or scratches
repairing minor imperfections where possible
Our approach is always careful and respectful. The aim is never to artificially reinvent photographs or apply heavy automated effects, but simply to help the image look as good as it reasonably can while remaining true to the moment it was captured.
Where restoration is applied, we can also provide both the original scan and the restored version.
File Formats & Delivery
Digitised photographs are supplied as high-quality digital files suitable for viewing, sharing and long-term storage.
Standard delivery includes:
high-resolution JPEG files for easy viewing and sharing
secure digital download for smaller collections
For those who would like archival copies, we can also provide TIFF master files suitable for long-term digital preservation. Because TIFF files are significantly larger, storage will usually need to be supplied or purchased when choosing this option.
For larger collections, we can also supply files on USB drives or external storage.
Typical orders range from 200 to 1000 photographs, and we are always happy to discuss larger family archives or long-term preservation projects.
